Boldly Draw Near to God Through Christ
Having therefore, brothers, boldness to enter into the holy place by the blood of Jesus, by the way which he dedicated for us, a new and living way, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; and having a great priest over God’s house, let’s draw near with a true heart in fullness of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and having our body washed with pure water,
The book of Hebrews reminds us that because of Jesus, we have a profound privilege: "boldness to enter into the holy place by the blood of Jesus." For many years, only the high priest could enter the holiest part of the temple, and only once a year, carrying the blood of sacrifices. The common person could only watch and wait. But Jesus changed everything. His sacrifice on the cross tore the temple veil from top to bottom, signifying that the barrier between God and humanity was removed. His body, torn for us, became "a new and living way" into God's very presence.
This means that our access to God is not earned, but given. We don't need to perform special rituals, buy certain items, or sow a 'seed' of money to gain God's favour or get His attention. The passage says we have "a great priest over God’s house" in Jesus Himself, and because of His complete work, we can simply "draw near with a true heart in fullness of faith." Our cleansing from an "evil conscience" and the washing of our bodies with "pure water" are spiritual realities accomplished by Christ, not steps we take to make ourselves worthy.
Think about what this means for your everyday walk with God here in Uganda. Do you sometimes feel you need something extra to make your prayers more effective, or to get God to move in your situation? This Scripture teaches us that Jesus’ sacrifice was utterly sufficient. His blood is enough. His torn flesh opened the way once and for all. We come to God not with desperate attempts to persuade Him, but with humble confidence born of what Jesus has already done.
Therefore, let us fully trust in this finished work. Our faith is not in our ability to perform, but in His perfect provision. We are welcomed into God's presence, not on the basis of our efforts, but solely through Jesus. What a wonderful truth to carry with us today, knowing we are always welcome and always heard.
Let's Pray
Almighty God, we thank You for the new and living way You opened for us through the precious blood and torn flesh of Your Son, Jesus Christ. We confess that sometimes we forget the completeness of His sacrifice and seek other means to draw close to You or gain Your favour. Forgive us for any doubt in the sufficiency of Jesus' work. Help us to draw near with true hearts and fullness of faith, trusting only in Him, our Great High Priest. Teach us to live in the freedom of direct access to Your presence. Amen.
