Pray Simply, God Already Knows

Matthew 6:5-8 · World English Bible

“When you pray, you shall not be as the hypocrites, for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Most certainly, I tell you, they have received their reward. But you, when you pray, enter into your inner room, and having shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. In praying, don’t use vain repetitions, as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard for their much speaking. Therefore don’t be like them, for your Father knows what things you need, before you ask him.

When Jesus taught about prayer, He pointed to the difference between seeking human applause and seeking God's heart. He warned against those who love to pray publicly in synagogues and street corners "that they may be seen by men." Such prayer, He explained, has already received its full reward – the praise of people. For us, true prayer is an intimate conversation, a turning inward to our Father "who is in secret," trusting that He sees and hears what no one else does.

Our Lord also warned against "vain repetitions" like the Gentiles use, who believe they will be heard for "their much speaking." This isn't a call to pray short prayers, but a caution against believing that God’s ear is opened by a multitude of words or by repeating certain phrases over and over as if to convince Him or make Him listen. Our Father is not a distant, difficult-to-persuade deity; He is a loving parent who already knows our needs deeply.

Sometimes, in our earnestness, we might fall into practices that subtly suggest we need to earn God’s favour or manipulate Him into action. We might think that certain prayer formulas, specific rituals, or a great show of words are what move God. But if we believe that Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross was sufficient, then we approach God not on the basis of our performance, but on the grace provided through Christ. His completed work makes a way for us to come boldly to His throne (Hebrews 4:16) with humble, sincere hearts.

Our prayer is not to inform God of something He doesn't know, nor is it to twist His arm. It is an act of humble dependence and communion with a Father who already knows our deepest needs before we even utter them. Knowing this truth frees us from anxiety about how to pray and allows us to simply talk with the One who loves us most.

Let's Pray

Almighty Father, we thank You for the privilege of coming to You in prayer. Forgive us when we have sought to impress others or have used vain words, thinking that our performance would move Your heart. Help us to remember that You are our loving Father who already knows what we need. May our prayers always be sincere conversations with You, rooted in the finished work of Jesus, our Saviour. Teach us to trust Your wisdom and Your perfect timing. Amen.
