Saved by Mercy, Not Our Efforts

Titus 3:4-7 · World English Bible

But when the kindness of God our Savior and his love toward mankind appeared, not by works of righteousness which we did ourselves, but according to his mercy, he saved us through the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly, through Jesus Christ our Savior; that being justified by his grace, we might be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

The Apostle Paul, in his letter to Titus, reminds us of the incredible truth about our salvation. He says that when God's kindness and love became clear, He saved us, "not by works of righteousness which we did ourselves, but according to his mercy." This is a powerful declaration, isn't it? It means our salvation is not a reward for anything good we have done or could ever do. It is purely an act of God's boundless mercy, extended to us even when we didn't deserve it.

God saved us "through the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit." This imagery speaks of a complete transformation, a new beginning given by God Himself. It’s not a partial fix or a spiritual top-up; it is a full rebirth, made possible by the Holy Spirit whom God "poured out on us richly, through Jesus Christ our Savior." Think about that: God fully equipped us, renewed us, and made us new creations, all through the finished work of Jesus on the cross and the power of His Spirit.

Because we are "justified by his grace," we are made "heirs according to the hope of eternal life." Our standing with God, our right to eternal life, is firmly established not by our religious practices or special offerings, but by His undeserved favour. This understanding helps us see clearly that when we fast, pray, give, or serve, we are doing so out of a heart full of gratitude for what God has already done. We are not performing these actions to earn His love, to force His hand, or to 'activate' a blessing that Jesus’ sacrifice didn't already secure for us. Such ideas can subtly diminish the sufficiency of Christ's work.

Let us remember that Jesus' sacrifice was more than enough. It paid the full price. We don't need to add anything to it or try to 'buy' extra favour from God through specific rituals or financial pledges. Our good deeds and faithful living are the fruit of a regenerated life, a loving response to the incredible mercy and grace we have already received. May we live each day resting in this foundational truth.

Let's Pray

Almighty God, we thank You for Your abundant kindness and love that appeared in Jesus Christ, our Savior. We are grateful that You saved us not by anything we did, but purely by Your mercy and grace. Thank You for the washing of regeneration and the renewing work of Your Holy Spirit within us. Help us to always remember that Jesus' sacrifice was complete and sufficient, and to live in the freedom and assurance of Your perfect work. May our lives be a joyful response to the undeserved love we have received. Amen.
