Jesus: Our Only Mediator to God
For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all; the testimony in its own times;
Our passage today from 1 Timothy speaks clearly about the unique place of Jesus Christ in our faith. It tells us, "For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus." Think about what a mediator does. In our communities, a mediator is someone who stands between two parties, perhaps to settle a dispute or to help them communicate when they cannot speak directly. Here, Jesus is presented as the only one who bridges the gap between God and humanity. He is not just a prophet or a good teacher; He is the exclusive link, the one true way for us to truly connect with the Father.
This truth is powerful because it means that access to God is not earned through our efforts or through anything we might buy or perform. Our passage goes on to say that Jesus "gave himself as a ransom for all." A ransom is a payment made to set someone free. Jesus’ death on the cross was the full and complete payment for the sin that separated us from God. Because of His sacrifice, the debt is paid, and the way to God is open for everyone who believes. This testimony, the Bible says, came "in its own times," meaning it was part of God’s perfect plan, revealed at the right moment.
This means that we do not need to look for any other person, object, or ritual to stand in for us before God. If we buy special oils, or cloths, or even pay money, believing these things will give us a better connection to God or ensure a miracle, we are unknowingly suggesting that Jesus' ransom was not enough. We might think these actions are acts of faith, but they can inadvertently take away from the completeness of Christ's work on the cross. His sacrifice was perfect and final.
God desires a direct and personal relationship with us, made possible through Jesus alone. We do not need a spiritual go-between apart from Him, nor do we need to perform extra steps to secure God’s favour. Our confidence in approaching God should rest solely on what Jesus has already done for us. This truth brings us true freedom and peace, knowing we are fully accepted because of Him.
Let's Pray
Almighty God, we thank You for Your profound love demonstrated in sending Jesus Christ, our only mediator. We are grateful that He gave Himself as a ransom for all, making a complete and perfect way for us to come before You. Help us to always remember the sufficiency of His sacrifice and to trust only in Him for our access and blessings. Deliver us from any practices that diminish the fullness of His work, and strengthen our faith to rely solely on Your grace through Jesus. Amen.
