God Blessed Us Freely in Christ
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ; even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and without defect before him in love; having predestined us for adoption as children through Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his desire, to the praise of the glory of his grace, by which he freely gave us favor in the Beloved,
The Apostle Paul opens his letter to the Ephesians with a declaration of praise: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ.” Let us take a moment to consider the weight of these words. God has already blessed us, not with a few blessings, or even most, but with “every spiritual blessing.” This blessing is not something we must wait for or strive to achieve in the future; it is already ours, secured and available “in Christ.” It is a settled fact, a completed work.
This incredible truth is not based on anything we have done or could ever do to earn it. The passage goes on to say that God “chose us in him before the foundation of the world” and “predestined us for adoption as children through Jesus Christ to himself.” Our place in God’s family, our call to be holy and without fault before Him, all spring from His own sovereign will, “according to the good pleasure of his desire.” It is purely by “the glory of his grace, by which he freely gave us favor in the Beloved.” Everything good we have in the spiritual realm is a free gift, freely given, not earned by our efforts.
If God has already blessed us with every spiritual blessing by grace through Christ, what does this tell us about some of the practices we sometimes encounter? When we feel the need to purchase a special 'holy' item from someone to receive a miracle, or sow a 'money seed' with the expectation that God is somehow obligated to return it with a specific blessing, are we truly trusting in the sufficiency of Christ's finished work? Or when we fast, not out of a genuine desire to draw closer to God, but primarily to try and compel Him to act in a certain way, does it suggest that His grace and provision are not already enough?
Such actions, though often well-intentioned, can sometimes betray a subtle misunderstanding. They might imply that we need to add something to Jesus' sacrifice to unlock God's blessings. But Ephesians 1:3-6 clearly shows us that Christ's work on the cross was entirely sufficient. God's grace has already provided everything we need spiritually. Our true response is not to strive to earn what is already ours, but to live in humble gratitude and faith, embracing the abundant life He has freely given us in His Son.
Let's Pray
Gracious God, we thank You for Your amazing love and for the spiritual blessings You have poured out upon us in Christ. Help us to truly understand and rest in the truth that in Jesus, we have been freely given every blessing. Forgive us when we try to add to Your finished work or attempt to earn what is already ours by grace. Strengthen our faith to trust completely in the sufficiency of Christ's sacrifice and Your generous provision. May our lives always reflect Your glorious grace. Amen.
