Jesus Declared: It Is Finished
When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, “It is finished.” He bowed his head, and gave up his spirit.
John 19:30 captures a moment of immense significance. As Jesus tasted the sour wine, His final, powerful words were, "It is finished." This was not a cry of defeat, but a triumphant declaration that His earthly work, His divine mission to redeem humanity, was brought to perfect completion. Every prophecy concerning His suffering and sacrifice had been fulfilled, and the full requirement for dealing with our sin had been met. It signifies that the immense debt separating us from a holy God was entirely settled.
This declaration, "It is finished," is the cornerstone of our faith. It means there is nothing left for us to do to earn God's favour or secure our salvation. Jesus' sacrifice was completely sufficient. When we fast, believing that our hunger will somehow persuade God to change His mind about a situation, we risk implying that His will or His love needs human effort to be moved. Similarly, seeking to buy special "holy" items, hoping they possess unique power to bring miracles, suggests that God's grace or power is somehow limited or dependent on external objects rather than freely available through Christ alone.
The truth of Jesus’ complete work also calls us to examine practices like sowing money seeds with the expectation that such giving will force God to respond with specific blessings or outcomes. While generous giving is a biblical act of worship, when done with the intention of manipulating God for a return, it misunderstands the nature of His grace. These approaches, even if well-intentioned, can inadvertently suggest that Jesus’ sacrifice was incomplete, and that we need to add our own works, rituals, or financial contributions to secure God's full attention or power.
Instead, we are invited to rest in the glorious sufficiency of what Jesus has already accomplished for us. Our confidence is not in our own efforts, rituals, or how much we can give, but entirely in the perfect, once-for-all sacrifice of Christ on the cross. This completed work fully reconciles us to God. Our prayers, our giving, and our service flow from hearts overflowing with profound gratitude for this complete salvation, knowing that everything we need has already been freely provided.
Let's Pray
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the profound truth of Your Son Jesus' declaration, "It is finished." We praise You that His sacrifice on the cross was perfect and fully sufficient to pay for our sins and restore us to You. Forgive us when we have, in our misunderstanding, sought to add to His complete work, thinking we needed to earn Your favour or secure Your blessings through our own efforts or rituals. Help us to truly understand and rest in the completeness of His atonement, trusting only in Him. May our lives be a joyful response to Your abundant grace, living in the freedom His finished work provides. Amen.
