Christ Our Full Provision
Because of him, you are in Christ Jesus, who was made to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption: that, according as it is written, “He who boasts, let him boast in the Lord.”
Our passage today opens with a powerful truth: "Because of him, you are in Christ Jesus." This tells us that our spiritual standing, our very connection to God, is not by our own doing or merit, but entirely by God's grace and initiative. He placed us in Christ, and in doing so, provided everything we could ever need for a right relationship with Him and a meaningful life.
The Apostle Paul then lists four profound gifts that Christ embodies for us: He "was made to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption." Consider this deeply. Christ is our wisdom, guiding us in knowing God's will and living according to it, so we do not need to seek special insights from external sources. He is our righteousness, meaning we are made right with God not through our good deeds, but through His perfect life and sacrificial death. He is our sanctification, setting us apart as holy for God's purposes, a process rooted in His finished work, not in purchased blessings or human rituals. And He is our redemption, having paid the full price to free us from the slavery of sin.
This comprehensive provision in Christ directly speaks to our current teaching series. If Jesus Christ has already been made to us all these essential things, why would we then seek them through other means? If He is our complete wisdom, why would we need to buy a 'holy' item to gain revelation or sow a 'seed' for understanding? If He is our righteousness and sanctification, why would we believe that a special prayer from a man of God, or a particular fast, is needed to secure God's favour or make us more acceptable? These actions, however well-intentioned, can subtly suggest that Christ’s sacrifice on the cross was somehow incomplete or insufficient to fully provide for us.
The passage concludes with an important instruction: "that, according as it is written, “He who boasts, let him boast in the Lord.”" Our confidence, our hope, and our trust must rest solely in what God has already accomplished through Christ Jesus. There is nothing we can add to His perfect and complete work. Our boast is in Him alone, for in Him, we are truly complete and lack nothing vital for our faith and walk with God.
Let's Pray
Gracious God, we thank You for the indescribable gift of Your Son, Jesus Christ. We praise You that through Him, You have made us complete, providing us with true wisdom, perfect righteousness, holy sanctification, and full redemption. Forgive us, Lord, for the times we have looked to our own efforts or external things, implying that Christ's sacrifice was not enough. Help us to always find our full identity and provision in Him, trusting only in His finished work. May our boast always be in You, through Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.
