Made Full in Christ's Work
and in him you are made full, who is the head of all principality and power; in whom you were also circumcised with a circumcision not made with hands, in the putting off of the body of the sins of the flesh, in the circumcision of Christ; having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.
The Apostle Paul writes in Colossians 2:10 that in Christ, "you are made full". Think about that for a moment. What does it mean to be made full? It means to be complete, lacking nothing. Christ is the head over "all principality and power," meaning there is nothing higher or more powerful than Him, and because you are in Him, you share in that completeness and authority. This truth stands against any idea that we need to add something to what Jesus has already done for us on the cross. We do not need to seek out special prayers, buy holy items, or perform extra rituals to become more complete or to gain God's favour; in Christ, we already have it all.
Paul goes on to explain this completeness further, speaking of a spiritual change that has happened to us: "in whom you were also circumcised with a circumcision not made with hands, in the putting off of the body of the sins of the flesh, in the circumcision of Christ." In the Old Covenant, circumcision was a physical sign of belonging to God's people. But for those who believe in Christ, God has performed a spiritual circumcision. This is an internal work, a "putting off" of our sinful nature, done by Christ Himself, not by human effort or a ritual. It is a profound, unseen transformation that sets us apart and cleanses us from within.
This internal transformation is beautifully symbolised by baptism. Verse 12 tells us we were "buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead." When we are baptised, we are publicly declaring that our old life of sin has died with Christ and our new life has begun with Him. This new life is not earned by the act of baptism itself, but it is "through faith in the working of God." It is God who performs this work, raising us just as He raised Jesus from the dead. Baptism is an outward sign of an inward reality that God has already accomplished.
What does this mean for our daily walk? It means we trust fully in Christ's finished work. When we feel we need to fast excessively for God to notice us, or sow a special financial seed to unlock a blessing, or purchase a 'holy' anointing oil to receive a miracle, we are effectively saying that Christ's sacrifice was not enough. But the Bible assures us that we are complete in Him. Let us rest in this glorious truth: God has already given us everything we need for life and godliness through His Son, Jesus.
Let's Pray
Almighty God, we thank You for the profound truth that in Christ, we are made full. We praise You for the spiritual circumcision that has put off our sinful nature and for raising us to new life with Him through faith. Help us, Father, to fully trust in the complete and sufficient sacrifice of Your Son. Guide us away from seeking to add human works or rituals to Your perfect plan. May we live each day resting in the assurance that we have everything we need in Jesus. Amen.
