Redeemed by Christ's Precious Blood Alone
knowing that you were redeemed, not with corruptible things, with silver or gold, from the useless way of life handed down from your fathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb without blemish or spot, the blood of Christ;
Peter reminds us that our rescue from a shallow, inherited way of living was not paid for with ordinary things like silver or gold. He calls these "corruptible things," meaning they spoil, they lose their value, and they are temporary. Think of how quickly money can be spent, or how even a very valuable item can be lost, stolen, or decay over time. These earthly possessions, no matter how much we value them, could never truly buy back a human soul or secure a right standing with God.
Instead, our redemption was paid for with something far more profound and lasting: "precious blood, as of a lamb without blemish or spot, the blood of Christ." This powerful image points directly to Jesus’ perfect sacrifice on the cross. In the Old Testament, the lambs chosen for sacrifice had to be perfect, without any defect. Jesus was the spotless Lamb of God, whose sinless life made His blood the ultimate, unique payment for our sin and for our redemption. His sacrifice was complete and perfect.
When we truly grasp the preciousness and completeness of Christ's blood, it transforms our understanding. It means our salvation, our access to God, and all His blessings are secured through His finished work, not through any efforts or payments of our own. If Christ's blood was the perfect and final payment, why would we then believe we need to purchase special items, or sow money in a particular way, to receive God's favour or miraculous intervention? These kinds of actions can unintentionally suggest that Christ's sacrifice was not fully sufficient, or that God requires us to add something extra to His perfect provision.
The truth is that Christ’s sacrifice was absolutely enough. Our redemption is a gift, freely given and received through faith in Him. We do not need to try and earn what He has already bought for us with His own life. Trust in the full power of His precious blood. Live in the freedom and assurance that His work is complete, and that through Him, you are fully redeemed and deeply loved.
Let's Pray
Almighty God, we thank You for the precious blood of Your Son, Jesus Christ, that fully redeemed us from an empty way of life. We confess that sometimes we forget the completeness of His sacrifice and seek to add our own efforts or possessions to earn Your favour. Forgive us for such lack of faith. Help us to always remember that Your love and grace are freely given, secured by Christ’s perfect work alone. May we live in the truth of His finished redemption. Amen.
