God Desires Justice, Not Empty Rituals
Hear Yahweh’s word, you rulers of Sodom! Listen to the law of our God, you people of Gomorrah! “What are the multitude of your sacrifices to me?”, says Yahweh. “I have had enough of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed animals. I don’t delight in the blood of bulls, or of lambs, or of male goats. When you come to appear before me, who has required this at your hand, to trample my courts? Bring no more vain offerings. Incense is an abomination to me; new moons, Sabbaths, and convocations: I can’t stand evil assemblies. My soul hates your New Moons and your appointed feasts. They are a burden to me. I am weary of bearing them. When you spread out your hands, I will hide my eyes from you. Yes, when you make many prayers, I will not hear. Your hands are full of blood. Wash yourselves, make yourself clean. Put away the evil of your doings from before my eyes. Cease to do evil. Learn to do well. Seek justice. Relieve the oppressed. Judge the fatherless. Plead for the widow.”
God’s message to Judah in Isaiah chapter one begins with strong, direct words. He calls them “rulers of Sodom” and “people of Gomorrah,” names associated with deep sin and rebellion. Yet, these were people who were still faithfully bringing their “sacrifices,” their “burnt offerings,” and observing their “new moons, Sabbaths, and convocations.” But God says, “What are the multitude of your sacrifices to me?” He continues, “I have had enough of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed animals. I don’t delight in the blood of bulls, or of lambs, or of male goats.” He further states, “Incense is an abomination to me; new moons, Sabbaths, and convocations: I can’t stand evil assemblies. My soul hates your New Moons and your appointed feasts. They are a burden to me. I am weary of bearing them.” What could make God so strongly reject practices He Himself commanded?
The problem was not with the rituals themselves, but with the hearts and lives of the people performing them. God reveals the disconnect when He says, “Your hands are full of blood.” While they were outwardly religious, their daily lives were filled with injustice, oppression, and sin. They likely thought that their sacrifices and “many prayers” would somehow appease God or cover their wrongdoing, allowing them to continue living unrighteously. This approach turns worship into a transaction, a way to manipulate God rather than sincerely connect with Him.
Sometimes, we too can fall into a similar trap in our walk of faith. We might engage in specific spiritual practices like fasting, giving special offerings, or even using certain prayer forms, believing these actions alone will obligate God to change a situation or grant us a miracle. When we put our trust in the performance of these acts rather than in God's grace and the finished work of Jesus on the cross, we subtly imply that His sacrifice was not entirely sufficient. We suggest that we need to add our own efforts or rituals to complete what Jesus has already done freely and fully for us.
But God’s desire for us, as it was for Judah, is a transformed heart that leads to a transformed life. He calls us: “Wash yourselves, make yourself clean. Put away the evil of your doings from before my eyes. Cease to do evil. Learn to do well. Seek justice. Relieve the oppressed. Judge the fatherless. Plead for the widow.” True worship flows from a heart cleansed by Jesus’ sacrifice, expressed through genuine love for God and active, righteous living that seeks justice and compassion for others. This is the faith God truly delights in.
Let's Pray
Almighty God, we come before You, confessing that sometimes we may focus on outward religious duties without a truly repentant heart or a life reflecting Your righteousness. Forgive us for any time we have acted as though our performances could earn Your favour or add to the complete and perfect sacrifice of Jesus. Help us to live lives that truly honor You, to put away evil, to learn to do well, and to actively seek justice for the oppressed around us. May our every action and prayer flow from a heart made clean and dedicated to You through Your Son. Amen.
