Jesus Secures Our Access to Grace
Having then a great high priest, who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold tightly to our confession. For we don’t have a high priest who can’t be touched with the feeling of our infirmities, but one who has been in all points tempted like we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore draw near with boldness to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy, and may find grace for help in time of need.
Our passage today introduces us to Jesus as a “great high priest, who has passed through the heavens.” This description is significant because it tells us that Jesus is not just any priest. Unlike the priests of old who served in an earthly tabernacle and then a temple, Jesus has entered the very presence of God in heaven. He is unique, perfectly qualified, and stands forever before God on our behalf. He is the ultimate intercessor for all who believe in Him.
What makes Jesus even more remarkable as our High Priest is His deep understanding of our struggles. The scripture says He “can’t be touched with the feeling of our infirmities,” but instead “has been in all points tempted like we are, yet without sin.” He knows what it is to face challenges, to feel the pull of temptation, and to live in a broken world. Yet, He never sinned. This means He can truly sympathise with us, not from a distance, but from personal experience.
Because of this great, compassionate High Priest, we are invited to “draw near with boldness to the throne of grace.” Notice that it is a *throne of grace*, not a throne of judgment or a throne that demands payment. Our access is not earned by our good deeds, our fasting, or by purchasing special items that someone has prayed over. Our boldness comes solely from Jesus’ finished work on the cross, which made Him our perfect High Priest.
We don't need any other human intermediary or any ritualistic act to approach God. Through Jesus, we can confidently go directly to God’s presence whenever we need to, knowing that we will “receive mercy, and may find grace for help in time of need.” What a wonderful assurance this is, that God's grace and mercy are freely available to us through our Saviour, Jesus Christ, without any additional cost or effort on our part. His sacrifice was indeed enough.
Let's Pray
Almighty God, we thank You for sending us Jesus, our great and compassionate High Priest. Thank You that through Him, we can boldly draw near to Your throne of grace. Help us to trust fully in His finished work, knowing that we do not need to seek other ways to find Your favour or receive Your help. Grant us mercy and grace in every time of need, as we depend completely on Christ alone. Amen.
