Trust God, Seek His Kingdom First

Matthew 6:31-33 · World English Bible

“Therefore don’t be anxious, saying, ‘What will we eat?’, ‘What will we drink?’ or, ‘With what will we be clothed?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first God’s Kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well.

Our passage today, from Matthew's Gospel, brings us a clear message from Jesus about where our focus should truly lie. He tells us plainly, “Therefore don’t be anxious, saying, ‘What will we eat?’, ‘What will we drink?’ or, ‘With what will we be clothed?’” Jesus understands the very real concerns we have about providing for ourselves and our families. In Uganda, where daily life often brings its own set of struggles, these words resonate deeply. It is natural to worry, but Jesus points us to a higher truth.

He reminds us that “your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.” This is a comforting truth. Our God is not distant or unaware of our daily struggles. He is our Father, intimately acquainted with our every need, from the food on our plates to the clothes on our backs. He doesn't need us to beg Him for what He already knows we lack, or to perform elaborate rituals to get His attention. His knowledge of our needs is born out of His deep, fatherly love for us.

The instruction that follows is crucial: “But seek first God’s Kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well.” This is not an instruction to ignore our responsibilities, but to reorder our priorities. Instead of anxiously chasing after material things, or believing we must ‘force’ God’s hand through specific actions, our main pursuit should be God’s reign in our lives and His standard of right living. When we make God’s will and His ways our primary concern, a wonderful promise follows: He will ensure our needs are met.

This passage teaches us that true faith means trusting God’s provision because He is our loving Father. We do not need to buy ‘holy’ items or sow ‘money seeds’ to unlock His blessings for our basic needs. Such practices can subtly imply that God’s willingness to provide is conditional on our efforts beyond simple obedience and trust. Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross secured our relationship with the Father, making us His beloved children. Our part is to live faithfully, trusting in His sufficient love and care, knowing that He has already provided the ultimate sacrifice.

Let's Pray

Heavenly Father, we come before You today, humbled by Your deep knowledge of our needs. Forgive us when we allow anxiety to consume us, or when we seek to secure our future through our own striving rather than trusting Your care. Help us to truly believe that You know what we need, and that You delight in providing for Your children. Guide our hearts and minds to seek Your Kingdom and Your righteousness above all else. Strengthen our faith, Father, to rest in Your perfect provision, knowing that in Christ, we have everything we need. Amen.
