Complete Freedom in God's Son

Romans 8:31-35 · World English Bible

What then shall we say about these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who didn’t spare his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how would he not also with him freely give us all things? Who could bring a charge against God’s chosen ones? It is God who justifies. Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, yes rather, who was raised from the dead, who is at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Could oppression, or anguish, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

Today, as we celebrate Independence Day in Uganda, we reflect on what it means to be truly free. In Romans 8, Paul asks a powerful question: "If God is for us, who can be against us?" This is not a cheap slogan to guarantee a smooth life. Paul is writing to believers who faced real hardships. Yet, he points us to the ultimate proof of God's favor. God "didn’t spare his own Son, but delivered him up for us all". If God has already given us His most precious treasure, we can be absolutely sure of His goodwill toward us.

Sometimes, we are tempted to behave like we still need to bargain for God's love. We hear teachings that tell us to pay money to receive a miracle, buy blessed items for protection, or fast intensely just to change God’s mind. But look at what the scripture says. He will "freely give us all things" with Christ. If salvation and all its blessings are freely given, why do we think we can buy them with our pocket change or bribe God with our performance? To suggest we must pay for what God has already given is to say that the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross was not enough.

Our spiritual freedom means we do not stand before God as beggars trying to earn a favor. We stand as justified children. When we face "oppression, or anguish," or economic hardship, we do not need to panic or run to opportunistic preachers promising quick fixes for a fee. Christ, "who is at the right hand of God," is already making intercession for us. Nothing can "separate us from the love of Christ." Today, let us celebrate our independence not just as a nation, but as children of God who are fully loved, fully accepted, and completely free in Christ.

Let's Pray

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of freedom, both as a nation and as Your children. Thank You for not sparing Your own Son, but delivering Him up for us all. Forgive us for the times we have tried to earn or buy Your blessings, forgetting that You freely give us all things in Christ. As we face the challenges of daily life, remind us that nothing can separate us from Your love. Help us to rest in the finished work of Jesus on the cross. Amen.
