Stand Firm in Christ's Freedom
Stand firm therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and don’t be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. Behold, I, Paul, tell you that if you receive circumcision, Christ will profit you nothing. Yes, I testify again to every man who receives circumcision, that he is a debtor to do the whole law. You are alienated from Christ, you who desire to be justified by the law. You have fallen away from grace.
Our passage today from Galatians is a powerful call to freedom. Paul urges us to "Stand firm therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and don’t be entangled again with a yoke of bondage." What kind of bondage is he talking about? It's the bondage of trying to earn God's favour or salvation through our own efforts, through religious rules or rituals. For the Galatians, this was the act of circumcision, a physical sign from the Old Covenant. They were being told they needed to add this to their faith in Christ to be truly right with God.
Paul is very clear, even blunt, about the danger of this thinking. He says, "if you receive circumcision, Christ will profit you nothing." And further, that those who seek to be justified by such means are "alienated from Christ" and have "fallen away from grace." This is a strong warning. It means that when we try to add our own works or rituals to what Christ has already done for us on the cross, we are effectively saying that His sacrifice was not enough. We are turning away from the complete, perfect work of Jesus and trying to finish it ourselves. But if we try to earn God's acceptance through one rule, we become debtors to keep the whole law, which is impossible.
Today, we may not be troubled by circumcision for salvation, but the principle remains vital. Are there things we do in our faith that suggest Christ's work wasn't quite complete? Perhaps we believe that buying a 'holy' item will bring a miracle, or that a specific type of fasting will force God to change a situation, or that sowing a 'seed' offering will obligate Him to bless us financially. These practices, when viewed as necessary additions to Christ's finished work for our justification or to secure His favour, risk becoming our own "yoke of bondage." They can subtly shift our trust from Jesus' grace to our own human efforts.
The freedom Christ gives us is total. It's a freedom from the burden of trying to earn what God has already freely given through His Son. Let us remember that our standing with God, our justification, and our eternal hope come from Christ alone, by grace through faith. There is nothing we can add to His perfect work. Let us truly stand firm in this complete and liberating truth.
Let's Pray
Almighty God, we thank You for the great liberty You have given us through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Thank You that His sacrifice on the cross was complete and perfect, making us free from the burden of trying to earn Your favour. Help us, Lord, to stand firm in this grace and never be entangled again by any yoke of bondage or by practices that suggest Christ's work was not enough. Keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, in whom we have all things. Amen.
