Jesus' One Perfect Sacrifice

Hebrews 10:11-14 · World English Bible

Every priest indeed stands day by day serving and often offering the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins, but he, when he had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down on the right hand of God; from that time waiting until his enemies are made the footstool of his feet. For by one offering he has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.

The letter to the Hebrews gives us a clear picture of the vast difference between the old way of relating to God and the new. It contrasts the endless duties of the Old Covenant priests with Jesus' finished work. We read, "Every priest indeed stands day by day serving and often offering the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins". Imagine a priest performing the same rituals, day after day, year after year. His work was never truly done because those animal sacrifices could only cover sins temporarily; they could not truly remove sin from God's sight. The constant standing symbolised a task that was perpetually incomplete.

But then comes Jesus, our Great High Priest. The passage continues, "but he, when he had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down on the right hand of God". What a powerful contrast! Unlike the priests who constantly stood, Jesus sat down. His act of sitting is not about merely resting after a tiring job, but about the glorious completion of a monumental, eternal task. His "one sacrifice for sins forever" was so perfect and powerful that it achieved what all the previous sacrifices could not: it truly dealt with sin, once and for all. His sitting signifies His victory, His supreme authority, and the absolute sufficiency of His work.

This completed work has profound implications for us today. The passage declares, "For by one offering he has perfected forever those who are being sanctified." This means that because of Jesus' single, perfect offering, our standing before God is eternally secure. We are made perfect, made right with God, not because of anything we do, but entirely because of what Jesus has already done for us on the cross. We are already seen as perfect in God's eyes through Him, even as we continue to grow in holiness and become more like Him each day.

Understanding this truth frees us from the burden of trying to add to Jesus' finished work. If "by one offering he has perfected forever" those who believe, then what more could we possibly do? We do not need to perform additional acts or rituals to earn God's favour, to secure our salvation, or to complete what Jesus already accomplished. Our prayers, our giving, our fasting, our acts of service are not meant to make Jesus' sacrifice somehow more effective or to convince God to act in our favour. Instead, they are joyful responses of love, obedience, and dependence to a God who has already given us everything through His Son. They flow from a heart that trusts completely in the perfect, finished work of Christ, rather than a heart that believes more is needed to make us fully right with God.

Let's Pray

Almighty God, we thank You for the incomparable sacrifice of Jesus, Your Son. We are so grateful that by His one perfect offering, He has dealt with our sins completely and "perfected forever" those who trust in Him. Help us to truly grasp the fullness and sufficiency of His finished work on the cross. May we never seek to add to what He has already accomplished, but instead live in the freedom and security of Your grace. Guide our hearts to serve and obey You not to earn Your love, but out of profound love and gratitude for all You have already given us. Amen.
