A Gift That Cannot Be Bought

Ephesians 2:8-9 · World English Bible

for by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast.

Many of us grew up believing that nothing of real value ever comes freely. In everyday life around Kampala, if someone promises you a job, a plot of land, or quick assistance without asking for something in return, caution immediately sets in. We are used to paying our way, negotiating, or bringing a token to soften someone's heart. Tragically, many believers carry that same transactional mindset into their walk with God. We easily slip into believing that we must buy God's favour, whether through financial seeds, purchasing blessed items, or exhausting ourselves with rituals to make Him look our way.

The Apostle Paul cuts through that exhausting thinking with stunning clarity. He reminds the church that "by grace you have been saved through faith". Salvation—and everything that comes with being reconciled to God—does not originate from our resources or our bargaining power. It is entirely "the gift of God". If you could purchase your standing before God with money or earn it through religious performance, it would no longer be grace. It would be a wage, and human beings would walk around boasting about what their own efforts secured.

When we run after anointed items or think God answers us only because we gave a specific amount of money, we quietly insinuate that the blood of Jesus was insufficient. Why would we try to pay for what Christ already bought with His life? Paul states clearly that our salvation is "not of works, that no one would boast." The Father does not relate to us like an earthly trader waiting for a bribe. He relates to us as a loving Father who has already poured out His kindness in His Son.

Today, take time to rest in the finished work of the cross. Stop trying to purchase what God has already freely given to those who trust Him. Approach your day with deep gratitude, confident that you stand accepted in Christ alone.

Let's Pray

Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your lavish grace that we could never earn or purchase. Forgive us for the moments we have treated Your favour like merchandise, thinking our money or religious striving could make us acceptable to You. Teach our hearts to rest fully in the sufficiency of Jesus' sacrifice on the cross. Strip away every urge to boast in our own works, and help us to live each day in simple, joyful gratitude for the free gift of life You have granted us through faith. In Jesus' name, Amen.
